While Confucianism entered Korea in the 4th century CE, it did not become prominent until the late 13th century. Describe for me one or two areas where the influence of Confucianism conflicted with other belief systems that were already in place.It is a known fact that Confucianism was introduced back in the 4th century but did not find any kind of strength and propagating power till the 13th century. There were certain reasons why Confucianism did not catch hold of the place immediately after its advent. Buddhism was the established religion of Korea and therefore, when Confucianism was introduced, it had to face conflicts with the said. Throughout the Unified Silla and Koryŏ periods Buddhism was followed and the religions under the said rulers had to follow the same. What was seen was by the end of the Koryŏ period was that the Buddhist establishment faced a very strong confrontation with the rising Confucianism in the state which was unavoidable. Confucianism was hitting hard at two of the ongoing processes by the Buddhist establishment.
The first was the attack on the economic front, which was the excessive and irrational control that the Buddhist churches had on the working of the economy and the government, and the second was all religious and philosophical grounds which opposed all the processes and practices under the Buddhist establishments. Everything that the Buddhists preached was begun to face confrontation and opposition. It has been noticed that even before the advent of this new religion in Korea, there were memorial which were anti Buddhist in nature. This can be traced back to 982, but it was not until the advent of Confucianism that the confrontation became instantly direct in nature (Mullins and Young 1995). These kinds of attacks which were concentrated in nature did not begin on Buddhism until 13-14th century and that is exactly the time period where one saw the rise of Confucianism. Confucianism and its preaching came as something new and sustainable to Korea and since people of the state had already dealt with so much of assertion from the Buddhist establishments Confucianism was something which not only was acceptable by them, but was also relieving.
