Chinese immigrants are settling in Canada since decades and some of them have been living in Canada since the time their elder generations decided to shift base. Guo (2013) has done substantial research into the work and learning culture of Chinese immigrants in Canada and has found that they have been discriminated due to the difference in ethnicity and the language they use. The Chinese have been facing discrimination at work, and hiring decisions are based on conditions which are mostly fulfilled by local and domestic population. The lack of fluency in English and the time consuming work of teaching the Chinese about the skill requisites is another reason why Canadian employers prefer to hire local population and pay them more than Chinese immigrants, who are considered as poor quality substitutes. Racialisation of Chinese immigrants based on their national and ethnic origins has given rise to low wage Chinese workers, part time workers, having less privileges in social security and job security, risks of unemployment and ill health, and seclusion from mainstream economically progressing society.

It is also observed that with such conditions on the side of Chinese immigrants, they will at least take 20 years to close the gap between them and the earnings of the domestic population (Wang & Lo, 2005), not considering the progress of the local population in those 20 years. Thus, it is a difficult situation for Chinese immigrants to make desired economic progress and obtain substantial freedom of growth in Canada. Cui (2011) has identified the idea of multiculturalism as lacking in Canada while studying the Chinese and Canadian youth and their experiences in school and university. It was found that the Chinese students were not considered as equal with the dominant white population, leading to racialism in social interactions. This racialism is also visible in the dominant media making it difficult for Chinese immigrants to establish their presence in the mainstream society. The maintenance of the ethnic language and culture is at threat since the young Chinese students are forced to adopt the Canadian language and culture.
