The potential benefits of bilingualism have been described in the book The Bilingual Edge (King & Mackey, 2009) and an article titled The Power of the Bilingual Brain (Times Magazine, Kluger, 2013). In the present day scenario of globalization, knowledge of multi-language is essential for better employment, travel and making friends from different linguistic domains. Further research has been conducted to find other non-linguistic advantages of bi-lingulism (Akhtar and Menjivar, 2012).
It has been found from different studies that bilinguals are advantaged in social understanding because they are exposed to a complex social world with people speaking different languages. For instance, Bilingual preschoolers can better understand the thoughts, feelings, attitudes, desires and intention of others (Biyaystok & Senman,2004, Kovacs,2009). It has been evidenced that bilingual infants (Kovacs & Mehler, 2009a, 2009b) and toddlers (Poulin-Dubois, Blaye, Coutya & Biyalistok, 2011) exhibit better cognitive advantages. Bilingual children have advantages in respect of memory such as generalization of information from one event to the later (Brito &Barr, 2012).
Although no studies have been made to find out the reasons for such advantages, there are a number of possibilities for the same. While interacting in two languages, bilinguals are required to frequently change over from their home language to the language of his conversation partner. In this process, they are required to inhibit one language while speaking the other. This constant exercise of their brains sharpens their intellects which in turn may put them in an advantageous position (Green, 1998). However, no studies have been made to establish that bilingualism is the only reason for the successful development of a child.
