Wilderness is a specific area largely unmodified and unmanaged by human beings. Because of increased technological power and human numbers, the areas which are deemed legally will be categorized under wilderness in the years to come. The unwitting, in-depth concepts ecology justify the continuity of such inequitable and narrow practices of wilderness preservation in a radical guise newly acquired (Muraca, 2013). At an increased rate, the international elite of preservation are using scientific, moral, and philosophical argument that deep ecologists use in the advanced crusade of wilderness.
Preservation of wilderness is strongly supportedunder two cornerstone positions across Western environmentalism as established since the last 20 years. The first position is an articulation that in terms of environmental ethics, wilderness holds intrinsic value and hence, it requires respectful treatment (Guha and Alier, 2013). The second position is to understand the concept of conservation biology while entering an era of major anthropogenic extinction of biodiversity loss and biological species. This is caused specifically due to human related economic activities and hence habitat preservation at the level of landscape is crucial for its amelioration (Nash, 2014).
However, it has been argued recently that preservation of wilderness is a Western or American preoccupation, and promoting it in the Third World is accountable towards cultural imperialism. This statement will be explored in this essay to identify if promoting wilderness preservation in the third world is positively harmful.
