The leader has to occupy many positions as support function in the case of change management. For instance, consider the position of the leader as a sponsor. A sponsor of change is an initiator of change. At this level, the change management leader is seen to be more than a representative of change management (Stagl, 2011). The leader is the owner of the change management process. As a sponsor the main support function of the leader is to ensure the right resource are aligned into the change management perspective. Secondly the leader must provide support by demonstration (Gill, 2003).
Here the leader will have to take up the change management initiative by demonstrating the change that they want to achieve in the organization (Bass 1999). If a behavioural change is being attempted in the organization, then the leader as the role model would have to exhibit such behaviour as they expect from their human resources. On the other hand, if the change that they want is with respect to some report making initiative, then the leader could post pro forma samples of their compliance to the new change for all other employees to see (Bass, 1999).
In the support function as a decision maker the leader should have the necessary authority to make decisions with respect to the change. The leader cannot be efficient as a change management agent if the leader is not given the proper authority to support the people under them (Stagl, 2011).The leader should be given the proper authority to handle people and budgets or equipment necessary in the context of change. The change management project must be in their span of their control. Leaders also play a role as the intermediaries or the voice of change management when it comes to connecting the employee and the management. Important information from people is shared with the management and the announcements from the management are shared with the employees (Stagl, 2011).
