It is a well- known fact that a crucial role is played by cities in the development of society and economy across each and every nation (Fraser et al., 2006). Urbanization is known for building dynamic and diversified economy which end up raising productivity, creating wealth and jobs, providing crucial services, absorbing growth of population and becoming the main engines of social and economic advancement. Thus, productive and efficient towns and cities are crucial for the national growth and welfare of the economy. Also, when considering the local context, strong economies from urban area help in generating the resources required for private and public investments in health, education, infrastructure and improved conditions of living. A number of cities have identified the significance of environmental planning for clarifying and identifying the systematic interaction between issues of development and environment. This provides them a better understanding about the complications of the environmental problems of the city, of the relationship between developmental and environmental factors, and of the inter- linkages (Lenzen et al., 2003).
In addition, majority of the cities have identified that successful management and planning of environment requires the coordinated action, agreement and understanding by a number of groups from the popular, private and public sectors from all across the nation, any city, community or even neighborhood. It is well understood that there is huge significance of undertaking a number of processes for the involvement and identification of the stakeholder. The Macao government has made a number of roles available under a Government Internship Program (GIP), providing opportunities of placement to students within the scope of expertise and interest. In general, GIP is applicable to a number of sectors including human resources, marginalized communities, transport policy and public works, public health, public policy, education, culture, trade and finance, and environmental sustainability (Pitts, 2004). Under the internship of environmental sustainability practicum, it was experienced that environmental planning is of huge significance and it can be considered as a crucial source for the achievement of sustainability.
