The Organizational Information Theory holds the argument that organizational activities are the processes that is made out of oblique information. This is achieved when organizational members endeavor to inject sense through selection, information retention and enactment. The process of making sense out of information propels the organization to success. The efforts put towards demystifying information ambiguity are the measure through which success is measured. The Structuration Theory indicates that organizational groups are responsible for creation of structures which may be interpreted as the resources and rules governing the organization. The created structures in turn lead to formation of social systems around the organization. The structuration theorists argue that organizations and groups attain independent life owing to the manner in which the members of the organization utilize the existing structures. The power structures in any organization define the way decisions in the group and/or organization are made (Walsham, 1990).
In the 1990 research conducted by Geoff Walsham and Chun-Kwong Han of Cambridge University Engineering department, it was stated that most research initiatives on organizational and social aspects are deficient of methodological and theoretical basis (Walsham, 1990). It was proposed in their research that the structuration theory offers a wide human society and social conception applicable as the foundation of empirical research and theories. The research points out some criticism sustained by some publications making use of structuration theory on support systems of decision making in groups and the inception of new communication technology. In the research the use of structuration theory information systems research process is suggested and some application areas pointed out and discussed. Some of the identified areas include formulation of strategy, design process and development, resistance by users against implementation of strategy and the aspect of information evidenced by the information systems (Stones, 2005).
