The fourth case study is a glider project that was done with the Loyola University of Chicago. Some of the resources used in terms of hardware in the school are new. A proper departmental research laboratory exists for the studies. The department makes use of open source Arduino, and had acquired Arduino boards, controllers, the needed wireless breadboards, electronic parts, sensors and pre robotics kits for the students. Student could make use of directly in their projects (Loyola University Chicago 2016).
Learning Outcome:Using these resources and activities, some of the learning outcomes that were finally achieved were in the form of building an airplane glider system, tracked robot rover which made use of a wireless interface, a memory testing game, guitar sound modification etc. Students develop a variety of skills and get exposed to different forms of interfacing for embedded systems extensions.
Some of the key differences seen between the case studies as used in schools and in the University are that of the technology used. In schools there is a preference for Raspberry Pi, whereas in the University, there is a preference for Arduino kits. Yet another difference is that in Universities, students get the option to work more independently. It is open source so the more advanced users are also able to get many benefits from it by extending its libraries. For instance, the language can be expanded by students through C++ libraries, and people’s wanting to understand the technical details can make use of the code directly into their programs as this makes their work much more extensible. Students using it not only learn about programming but also learn about the Atmel ATMEGA8 (name of microcontroller) and ATMEGA168 microcontroller that are used with it.
The preference for Raspberry Pi exists in schools because it is much easier for the students to learn from the interactive Pi platform than the open source Arduino platform. Also Raspberry Pi as noted from its website does much advocacy by collaborative projects with schools in order to help the students learn embedded systems and programming. The collaborative ventures are one reason that students are facilitated with a Pi environment for learning more than the Arduino kit.
