Stephen D Schwarz puts his contradictory views to the earlier thoughts on abortion. Abortion and infanticide occur when parents are not ready for child. Abortion may seem justified to some while it may be seen as a murder to others. According to Schwarz, foetus is also a person and killing a foetus is as harmful as killing an adult. He defends his point by taking several examples wherein he compares foetus with other to be believed persons. The traditional theory has two assumptions – First, a foetus is not a person and second, killing a human being is not immoral. Joseph Fletcher and Michael Tooley also align with the traditional theory. In order to contradict Tooley’s point, Schwarz takes the example of two babies – one who is born with coma and the other who develops coma after some time. In both the cases, the children would become normal at the age of 9 years. According to Tooley, at the age of 9, the first baby could be killed because he is not a person as he was a born comatose and had never functioned as a person, whereas the second baby developed coma after sometime so he is a person and hence has the right to live.

Warren essentially points out that a foetus is biologically a human being but that does not mean that he has the right to live. She tells that since it is only immoral when persons are killed, killing foetus is not wrong as they are not persons. So she tells, the fact that the foetus does not have any of the aforementioned qualities is the proof of foetus not being a person. Now, Schwarz negates Warren’s point of view by giving an example of a person who is in very deep sleep. Even that person does not have all the 5 characteristics, that is, consciousness, reasoning, self-motivated activity, communication capability and self-aware and self-concepts. So according to the theory of Warren, even he also cannot be called a person as he does not have the characteristics of a person and hence killing a sleeping person is also moral. Schwarz then tells that it is absolutely wrong to kill a sleeping human, because he is also a person even though he does not have even any one of the mentioned characteristics. Same goes with the foetus or the baby child. Even though he does not have any of the characteristics of a person, he is still a person or going to be a person and hence he also cannot be killed.
