The literature in psychology has focused on the changes of the relations that take place after divorce. The literature also focuses on the reaction of the children to divorce. According to the different studies, it has been found that poor adjustment of the parents after divorce can further lead to deterioration of the level of parenting and family relationships (Connolly, Marianne and Eric 5). The divorced individuals are found to display psychological distress, lower level of psychological well-being, and less happiness. Such individual also develops the symptoms of poor self-concepts (Burke, Jennifer and Heather 4). Parents who are undergoing divorce often display the noticeable emotional distress, which is characterized by escalation of ‘anger, irritability, anxiety, loneliness, sadness, depression and suicidality, and associated changes in self-concept and self-esteem’ (Burke, Jennifer and Heather 4). Divorce is also considered as the major cause of depression in adults. Single mothers undergo depression and psychiatric illness. These results due to different type of stresses associated with divorce and lack of social support. Such parents are not able to effectively deal with their problems and their children (Sigal 122).
Therefore, education programs and counseling help parents to deal with their emotional and psychological stresses, and encourage them to focus on better part of their lives. Programs help parents to learn about good parenting. The major issue that arises during and after divorce is to redefine the emotional boundaries with their children and to identify the new definition of the family roles. During and after the process of parental separation, children experience the feeling of disbelief, shock, aggression and confusion (Connolly, Marianne and Eric 5). In the environment with diminished or reduced parenting, as the parents seem to be struggling with their own problems, children may become aggressive and rebellious. Children can display the signs of social withdrawal and anxiousness. Therefore, educational program for children helps them to cope with the problems of parental divorce (Kurkowski 138). The psychological, emotional and educational interventions of such programs bring positive change in children.
