However, in understanding a leader, we must also understand how a leader is born. Are leadership skills present in a person or are they learnt? As I researched upon it, I found out that there were many different views regarding leadership that have been presented over the years. These theories play an important role in understanding the leader.
The first theory being the trait theory, which stated that a leader was born and certain characteristics distinguished leaders from non- leaders and one should always look for the difference (Lussier, 2015). It related certain personality, physical, intellectual and social traits to the leader and having those characteristics made a person a leader although it did not promise effectiveness.
In the later years, the behavioural theory of leadership argued that traits had nothing to do with a leader; however, leadership was the game of certain skills which if acquired made a person a leader and these skills not only made him a leader but also promised his effectiveness (Kotter, 1988). This was a much better model of leadership which made me believe that even I could be a leader.
Furthermore, another theory, the environmental theory of leadership, stated that the leadership was not only based upon skills but also upon the situation in which the leader existed and his effectiveness was measured by his reaction which was a set of intellectual skills and past experience. And this theory also helped me in understanding the leadership in a better way (Blanchard Et Al, 1985).
