Long ago during the 60’s and 70’s media was TV and TV alone, even before the 60’s generations through generations only means of communication and entertainment was to stare at the television watching the black and white screen over and over again, however there came a time when color TV was introduced and gradually from TV to computer and from there to more advanced gadgets took over the world.Anywhere you go, you come across messages being communicated in the form of bill boards, magazines, fliers and newspaper to ipad, iphone , commercials on the television, mobiles to advertisement in the games and so on we are continuously exposed to different media messages that keep on changing our perspective and choices.
The impact of Media is so strong that the need to have it in the curriculum was felt necessary and a huge turn in of students was observed since the field is both informative and current. UNESCO in one of their report published in 1982 that “We must prepare young people for living in a world of powerful images, words and sounds”(Levy, 2014).
Having Media Literacy as part of the curriculum is also necessary to educate and bring out people who become more attentive and educated adults of the society, field of Media literacy is very dynamic since we all think differently and one message that is perceived in a positive way might be perceived totally in negative by the other person, therefore many groups form, people follow them and make their own judgments and opinions(Hall & Manfull, 2014).
Canada holds the name as Pioneer to introduce the Media Literacy as part of their language Art Curriculum In 1987 for Grades 7 to 12. In 1995 the same was introduced for Grade 1 to 6, there are various Media Associations and Organizations who conduct workshops for the teachers and also provide audio visual teaching aids for them (Krueger & Christel, 2001).
The scope of Media literacy is ever changing and the introduction of it in the academia has been a very productive and positive towards developing the minds of youngsters to access, analyze, evaluate and create media messages.
