This reflective journal records both the successful and unsuccessful experiences that I encountered during the process of writing the research paper. I will provide with the comprehensive accounts of the writing process that I underwent for the purpose of the prepared research paper. I will provide the details about the major efforts along with the problems that were experienced in writing the research paper. This reflective journal is divided in different sections to cover all the efforts and challenges associated with each part of the process. The sections included are topic selection, introduction, design of method and instrument, collection and analysis of data, initial and later composition of the research paper drafts, revision and proofreading along with the challenges and their positive mitigation.
The topic selection was the first part of the writing process for the research paper purposes. In order to select the topic, I had to do a lot of brainstorming in order to identify the area of research where certain gaps exist. Therefore, I considered the topic of media texts and the prevalent discussion on the inclusion of reality within the media texts. This provided me with a strong basis to conduct a research with the use of journal articles, books and media texts in the initial exploration of the research gaps. However, I encountered a challenge in selecting the research topic since I believed that the lack of research across news reports could be one area where there is less emphasis. However, shortly I realized that expanding the scope of publishing time could improve the results due to which I integrated both course text and external journal articles for obtaining better understanding on the breadth of existing research across the media text.
Expanding the time limit on the journal articles that can be used provided with the critical insight that the researchers and authors have studied the media texts from the lens of the reality reflection. It allowed me to understand that none of the studies entailed the research on the news reports, reality TV show and documentaries in a single study. Therefore, this provided me with more motivation and it indicated how the realism and mediation along with the concepts of sub-realism can establish the reason behind media texts to not showcase the entire reality. I found from my initial research that media texts use various kinds of instruments, settings and environment for the shooting that develops the plausible sense of realism for the audience. Various journal articles that were used in the research paper provide with the insight due to the extensive mediation entailed in the production of media texts and the reality developed in a controlled setting varies from the one that exists. Hence, this resulted in the development of topic to explain the extent to which 3 media texts (news reports, documentaries and reality TV show) are not a direct reflection of reality.
