On viewing the film Psycho (1960), the audience was seen taking pleasure to lose this type of control as they were used to the enjoyment delivered in classical narrative cinema. There was manifestation of a loss of control in yells, screams, gasps, and also running across the aisles. All of these were known to be unprecedented. Psycho was known to be following a number of senses, an absolutely unexpected film, and the enhancement was done in accordance with a number of factors (Atsumi, 130): 1) the movie was filmed in absolute secrecy, 2) the scheme of marketing was known to utilize vague trailer offering no scenes relevant to the film providing vague generalities regarding woman and murders, and 3) no one was allowed for entering the theater after the starting of film. One of the most obvious challenges imposed on the conventions of classical narrative paradigm is the fact that the character of Janet Leigh not only ends up dying by the first 45 minutes in a film of 106 minutes, but actually experiences a brutal murder.

This tended to provide a two- fold impact. Firstly, it seems to be marking a radical and sudden departure from what is presumed by the audience for being the key focus of narrative progression of Psycho (Bordwell, 78). Considering the initial 30 minutes of the film, Psycho focuses on frustrated, young women, Marion Crane, who is not able to marry her love partner due to his debts so she ends up stealing 40,000 dollars hoping to run away for marriage. However, this ends up being a surprise for the audience, giving the impression that she is the main character and this story is followed until her story can be concluded. This presumably occurs right prior to the finalized credits. The first part of the film was merely considered as red herring for heightening the murder.
