These behaviors of teachers are also reiterated in Jean Anyon’s study. He stated that the working class, which is lower class, “is also largely mechanical, rote work that was given little explanation or connection to larger contexts” (Anyon 142). Rather than focusing on quality of education, the schools of working class prepared their students for “mechanical rote work” (Anyon 142). Such works reduced the human ability of planning and creativity, which in turn degraded the future industrial performance. The reason for such low -quality educational culture is the uneducated family background of teachers and administrators. The people wanted immediate work after their education and this was reflected by the teachers as well. After vocational school, Mike Rose’s father passed away which was causing him to be alone. During this time, a new teacher named Jack MacFarland started teaching English in his Senior Class.
Mike says that “Jack MacFarland could not have come into my life at a better time” (Rose 131). Mike deeply admired him because he honestly cared about his students and motivated them to work hard. Mike found his school years to be interesting and educational owing to the passion of MacFarland. On the contrary, this new teacher was regarded as quirky and eccentric by other students. Eventually, MacFarland influenced Mike to pursue further educational experience. Due to the efforts and support of MacFarland, Mike ended up attending college . MacFarland got a loan for the college expenditure. Mike “could never have afforded a private college without it” (Rose 133). College aided Rose to find him and groom him for the world.
