Gender as a element, has always been related with discrimination or invidiousness in people’s daily life and society, especially in politics. Female as the ‘second gender’ which is under male is usually limited in some private area like family. Gender discrimination has not only appeared in ordinary people’s life or career but, it has also been shown in celebrity culture. For a long time, female politicians are limited to the gender politics, they are treated in different ways with men. I will be analysing the experience of Sarah Palin in the American Presidential Election 2008, to show how gender politics worked in three aspects—-political parties, media and voters.
However, the gender politics especially the gender discrimination are not only shown in political celebrities, female celebrities in other fields have also been treated differently. In some countries which put high values on their traditional cultures, the gender discrimination is common, for example in China, the aesthetic of female beauty is fixed, people always have some fixed standard to limit the female celebrities’ images. While with the development of feminism, the traditional standard has been challenged by some special celebrities. In this part I will use Yuchun Li to be the example to show the subverts of the gender politics in China, and to show how feminism works in contemporary societies.
And through Yuchun Li’s cases, we can understand the subverts of the gender politics in China, and based on the understanding, we can know the contemporary situation of feminism and post-feminism in the world. In short, celebrity culture reveal the contemporary gender politics in the aspects of gender discrimination and feminism through the cases of Sarah Palin and Yuchun Li.
