In the story, the main protagonist Melisa is a combination of three characters. Roots of her characterization are inspired from a close friend, the main protagonist in the movie Chef and own inspiration. The chef’s path to self-discovery from being a barista in Fort Douglas to a chef in Sydney is the key plot in this story. Path to self-discovery is a popular concept that is seen in world cinema and Australian cinema. This is also a key theme in many novels. “In all the pretty horses” and in Elizabeth Gilberts “eat pray and love”, this central theme is observed. It has been found that this path to self-discovery is ever so popular amongst the audience. Even though there are have been a number of popular stories and rhetoric that have been essayed in the societies, in spite of this stores still find strong audience base in the societies. Owing to this, the script idea is influenced by the key concept of path to self-discovery.
Initial shyness and the fear of the unknown are seen in Melissa’s character. This is seen in the way she presents herself. She wears simple neutral colors, cardigans of the yesteryear and dresses ever so humbly that she is often missed in crowds. Fear of unknown and growing comfortable in the existing situation was seen in the movie Chef. The main protagonist essayed in Chef expresses these issues. In the movie Chef, the protagonist is initially complacent and chooses not to move forward. This causes issues in the personal life and professional life of the main protagonist. He is not tech savvy and does not understand the nuances and requirements of the situation. Owing to this, there are several setbacks in his life. This story line discusses about how the protagonist moves forward and succeeds in life by being true to the self. These were the inspirational factors that helped in developing the story line. There is a feeling of complacency initially. This, however, changes with time owing to the dire circumstances.
Another possible pitfall that was observed is that in the quest for self-discovery, notion of inflated self-image should not be developed Overt expressions of talent are not the logic behind this storyline. It should be noted that while developing the script, there should be fine balance in the story. There were efforts to show in the story line that there are many talented chefs, but Mellissa also has the inherent talent to develop into a strong chef. This story is not about showing the amplified talents of Mellissa. It is about showing how people should strive and pursue their inner talents and passions to be happy.
Thus, these were the key themes that influenced the developing of the script. Inspiration was drawn from these sources and also from the writings of Ayn Rand.
